Lawrence of Arabia (Columbia Pictures, 1962)

"Arabia, also known as God's sandbox"

The combination of cinematography married with score has never met it's cinematic equal. Arguably one of the best bio/movies ever to be seen. Long yes but with so much detail put into this behemoth, you will never stop finding something new to take in. Director David Lean is the polar opposite of Director Michael Bay. Lets just take a side trip and compare.....
Bay uses lots of action displayed though a machine gun of edits to the point where he could be filming a toilet flushing and you would never even know it. Another signature of Bay is the over blaring of sounds. From FX to score. This seems to be his way to get around telling a coherent story.

Now let's examine David Lean. Lean keeps his camera almost picture still. Many scenes are held static for a very long time allowing the action to unfold within the perfectly framed image. You actually study what is happening and are allowed to discover the complexities of the story instead of it being shouted at you.
Lean also uses editing and score only sparingly and when it serves the story, thus making them more powerful and memorable.

Wow! How did I get to here? Sorry about that little detour. Lets just talk about the film. It is very well done. It would be a crime if I didn't give this movie 4 out of 4 squids. So that is what I shall do.
